Congressman Hank Johnson (D-GA) Awarded GA Congressional Arthritis Champion Award
Honored for being a champion for People with Arthritis

Atlanta, GA - Congressman Hank Johnson was awarded the Arthritis Foundation’s Congressional Arthritis Champion Award for his outstanding work in 2015 on behalf of people with arthritis. Recognizing that arthritis rates are higher among active military personnel and veterans, Congressman Johnson signed a letter to the Appropriations Committee asking for more arthritis research funding for our military service members. He has led the effort to make sure people with arthritis have access to specialty tier medications, introducing the Part D Beneficiary Appeals Fairness Act, and co-sponsoring HR 1600, which will reign in high cost-sharing requirements for specialty tier drugs. And earlier this year, Congressman Johnson joined the Congressional Arthritis Caucus – a group of Congressman who educate fellow legislators about how arthritis impacts their communities and how to help support federal and local efforts addressing arthritis in all its forms.

“Expecting chronically ill seniors – most of whom are on a low, fixed income – to pay thousands of dollars of treatment for specialty drugs monthly is unrealistic and unfair,” said Johnson. “It’s as if we are telling our seniors: you can either have food on the table or the life-saving drugs – you can’t have both. Patients whose drugs are on the specialty tier are already struggling to make ends meet to afford their complex care needs. Extending this appeal right to them is only fair. I’m proud of the work my office does to help veterans, seniors and all constituents. As proud member of the Congressional Arthritis Caucus, I will continue to fight and be an advocate for those who suffer from arthritis – our nation’s leading cause of disability.”

The Advocates for Responsible Care (ARxC) has collaborated with Rep. Johnson and his staff on many of the issues that directly improve the lives of arthritis patients. Rep. Johnson works tirelessly to ensure access to medications and healthcare treatments for all who are chronically ill. No stranger to illness, he genuinely connects with people when speaking on their behalf. Congressman Hank Johnson has truly worked to make a difference in the lives of people with arthritis.
