ARxC Diabetes Prevention Program

Diabetes Epidemic in Georgia

In the past 15 years the number of adults who are diagnosed with diabetes in Georgia has more than doubled [1]. Today approximately 30% of adult Georgians are obese and 27% of adult Georgians are physically inactive, the two primary risk factors for becoming diabetic [2][3]. It is these startling statistics in addition to the racial and social-economic disparity of those who are diabetic that has driven the Advocates for Responsible Care (ARxC) to develop the ARxC Diabetes Prevention Pilot Program©.

The ARxC Diabetes Prevention Pilot Program©

The ARxC Diabetes Prevention Pilot Program© targets pre-diabetic and diabetic adults in the Atlanta area. The program will be offered as a one (1) year mobile program through day sessions at participating outpatient community clinics for 100 participants.

The program consists of two informative group sessions. The group sessions will provide practical information on healthy eating practices, physical activity, stress management, and motivation counseling. Participants must attend both sessions in order to benefit from the program. To promote physical activity, participants will also be required to participate in a physical activity regimen of their choice. A follow-up session is scheduled one month following the second group session. In addition to the three sessions, on-line and telephone support will be offered for one (1) year.

Program Goals (to be achieved after one year of enrollment in the ARxC Diabetes Prevention Pilot Program)

  1. Screening for Diabetes with risk factors overview
  2. Reduce body weight by 7%  (by completion of program)
  3. Increase physical activity to 150 minutes per week (by completion of program)
